LOCKSMITH PROJECT SPACE
6 Botany Rd Alexandria
Sydney NSW AUSTRALIA
Open during exhibitions Thursday – Saturday, 1–6pm

Locksmith Project Space is a not-for-profit, artist-run initiative located on the border between Redfern and Alexandria in Sydney, Australia. The directorial committee consists of four young and emerging artists; Kenzee Patterson, Samuel Villalobos, Yasmin Smith and Rachel Fuller.

Our program includes exhibitions, as well as experimental sound and music nights, and film and video screenings.

Locksmith Project Space has been operating for close to three years and is a particularly unique model as we attempt to support young and emerging artists by providing our exhibiting artists with artist fees, rent-free exhibitions, and zero commission on work sold.

During 2009 and 2010 we expanded our exhibition program through the publication of three issues of Locksmith Project, an independent, curated publication of local, national and international artists’ ideas and writing. Locksmith Project provided artists and writers with the opportunity to experiment with works-in-progress, initial ideas, research, sketches, plans and basically anything that constitutes making art work.

In May 2010 Locksmith Project Space was invited to take part in the 2010 Next Wave Festival keynote exhibition, Structural Integrity. Six Australian ARIs and five Asian ARIs spent four weeks in residence at the Meat Market where they got to know each other and produced work for the exhibition. The directors of Locksmith Project Space produced K-25934 (2010), a travelling, carnivale tent / trailer which is now on permanent display at the Arts House, Meat Market in North Melbourne. K-25934

2010
Box trailer, pine, fabric, lights

On the western outskirts of Sydney, in the suburb of Erskine Park, we acquired a box trailer from Marie and Jeff.

We headed south with the trailer in tow; we were bringing the carnival to the meat market and running away to join the circus.

Once our skeletal frame was erected, patch-by-patch we added the flesh, inverting the notion of carne vale.

On the back of this trailer we built a mobile home at once warm and inviting, but also uninhabitable.

As a result of our time in Melbourne, the directors of Locksmith will be travelling to Hobart in October 2010 to produce their first collaborative solo exhibition at Tasmanian ARI, six_a. Stay tuned for dates and pics!
